A chat with Mercedes Fernández de Córdoba

Her work is incredibly inspiring, and we love everything she reveals. Besides being a friend, she's one of our favorite Spanish interior designers, and we love that she shares her ideas, her tastes, and what motivates her every day with us.

What kind of projects motivate you the most?

Those who are outside of Spain and include traveling and getting to know new places, cities, and cultures.

What would be your dream project?
There are many things I'd like to do, but what I'd really enjoy is decorating a penthouse in Manhattan, and also a house in Estoril. I'd love to do both.

How did you come to know Katira and which pieces do you like the most?
I met Katira through Isabel, who, besides being my cousin, is my right-hand woman in the studio. She knows what's cool and what's latest, she's knowledgeable about everything, and she's always up to date.
The pieces I like most are the colorful ceramic ashtrays, their games, and the wool blankets, which are beautiful.

What motivated you to create your own studio?

I've always wanted to start my own studio, but at first, you always have doubts and don't dare to take the plunge. Since I'd been working for a few years, they told me not to hesitate, that I had good taste and a strong desire to do things my way. So in 2016, I took the plunge and couldn't be happier.

When you decorate a house, which room do you like and enjoy the most?

I like all rooms, I enjoy them all. But it's true that I have a soft spot for kitchens, because they're a place where friends and families gather, and I love that. Plus, they're very artistic and allow you to work a lot with the space.

What do you think is the most important thing to invest in when decorating?

Without a doubt, for the final result to be optimal, it's necessary to invest in the finishes, layout, and lighting. Lighting is very important, and if that fails, everything else will too.

What are your favorite pieces of designer furniture?

I'm not a big fan of modern designer furniture. I prefer timeless pieces, like Chippendale chairs or sofas with classic lines. I'm more of a "back to the classics" kind of person.

What is your favorite boutique hotel?

I love Christine Bedford's in Mahón, it's beautiful, super modern and ideally decorated.

What is your favorite project you have participated in?

I think that's still to come, but for now I'm sticking with the country house I built last year in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, or the one I built in Binisafua, Menorca, about three years ago, collaborating with architect Mario Connio.
